Mama's: The Keepers of Christmas
We are so excited about the run up to Christmas (we possibly enjoy the build up to the big day even more than Christmas Day itself!). In her beautiful poem, “Keepers of Christmas,” Beth Kempton captures the essence of motherhood during this festive time. The Christmas spirit is well and truly in the air, and we know how magical it can be for new mamas and mamas-to-be.
Yet, while we embrace the role of the “Keepers of Christmas,” it’s important to recognise the mental and emotional toll that this responsibility can take. The pressure to create a perfect festive experience can lead to stress and burnout. So let's talk about the mental load that comes with feeling the pressure of creating the perfect Christmas for your little ones:
- **Expectations**: The desire to create a magical Christmas can sometimes come with unrealistic expectations. Social media often portrays picture-perfect festivities, which can make us feel inadequate in our own celebrations. But remember, this is not reality!
- **Overwhelm**: Balancing Christmas preparations with everyday responsibilities can feel overwhelming. From gift shopping to meal planning, the to-do list can quickly grow, leaving little room for anything else.
- **Neglecting Self-Care**: In the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s easy to forget about our own needs. We often prioritise our families over ourselves, leading to burnout and fatigue.
Amongst the slightly chaotic and frighteningly quick days, it’s crucial to carve out time for ourselves, even if just for a short time. Here are some of our self-care tips to help you recharge during this busy season:
- **Set Boundaries**: Don’t be afraid to say no to additional commitments that may cause stress. Focus on the activities that truly bring you joy and fulfillment.
- **Schedule “Me Time”**: Carve out moments in your day dedicated solely to yourself. Whether it’s a quiet cup of tea, a leisurely walk, or a cosy bath, prioritise activities that help you unwind.
- **Practice Mindfulness**: Taking a few moments each day to breathe, reflect, and connect with your thoughts can help ground you amidst the Christmas rush. Consider incorporating mindfulness practices like meditation or journaling or practicing gratitude.
- **Lean on Your Support System**: Don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or fellow mothers for support. Sharing the load can lighten the burden and allow you to enjoy the season more fully.
This season, let’s honor the beautiful balance of giving and receiving, creating memories while nurturing our own well-being. After all, a happy and healthy mama is the best gift of all!
As we approach Christmas Day, we also want to acknowledge the diverse journeys of motherhood. December can be a time filled with joy, but it can also bring up a mix of emotions. For those who have faced struggles, whether it’s navigating pregnancy after loss or the challenges of sleepless nights, we see you and we honor your journey.
